Loretta Eleanor Maria Martha Medina Nicol was born October 8, 1936 in Monte Vista, Colorado to Serapio Medina and Sophia Espinosa Medina. Loretta was the youngest of thirteen children and at a young age learned to speak English as she listened to father read the paper and other stories to her. She spent her childhood in Monte Vista where she attended public schools and graduated from High School in 1956. Shortly after the death of her father, she and her mother relocated to San Francisco to be with other relatives living there. It was there that Loretta met and fell in love with Donald Nicol.
Donald and Loretta were married in Vallejo, California on April 7, 1960. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple in October, 1979. While living in the San Francisco area, they welcomed their first child, a daughter named Donnalee. Shortly after, they moved to Monte Vista, Colorado where they lived for six years and there they welcomed a son, Donald Jr. In 1968 they moved to Parma, Idaho and then permanently settled in Caldwell, where their third child, Sophia was born.
Loretta was always busy working with the community in different capacities as a Head Start Coordinator in Canyon County. She also worked for the South West District Health Department in the W.I.C. program and then after a temporary retirement she went back to work with the Canyon County Organization on Aging.
Loretta loved gardening and working in her yard despite the fact that she was slowing down. She was very artistic and creative. She loved baking and cooking and the grandkids always looked forward to having homemade beans and tortillas. But mostly mom loved her family. She loved each grandchild and each one was special to her and they knew that they were specially loved by her. She had 3 children, 18 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren with two more on the way.
Loretta passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning December 27, 2011 surrounded by family and friends. It was hard for us to let her go and she will be greatly missed but we know that she is having a sweet reunion with those that have gone on before her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Nicol, both her parents, her brothers Justo and Emeterio and her sisters Bertina, Betty and Mary and five infant siblings. She is survived by her brothers Frank and Fred of Colorado and her sister Ramona (Rosales) of Oregon, her three children, all her wonderful grand and great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
