Lora Nell Spence, 78 of Fairmount, Indiana died on Monday, June 2, 2014, at Marion General Hospital.

Born Friday, January 31, 1936 in Madison County, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Maxwell Smith and the late Beulah Maggart Larowe. She graduated from Fairmount High School and Ball State University were she earned her Bachelor’s, Master’s and Specialist’s degrees. Employed by Madison-Grant School System for 35 years, she started as a teacher at Liberty and Park. She then became the first special education teacher for the district and also the Director of the Special Education program, teaching for 18 years. She was the Principal at Park Elementary for 21 years before retiring in 1999.

She was an active member of Grant United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, held various offices and served on many committees. She was a lifetime member of the Fairmount Historical Museum, past president and member of the Madison-Grant Teacher’s Association and the Retired Teachers Association. She was a member and past president of the Marion General Hospital Auxiliary and a volunteer at Marion General Hospital and Marion Heart Center. She was a member of Gamma Sigma Chapter, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International serving as chapter president, state president, state treasurer, state executive secretary and also sat on the International Finance Committee. She was a past member and chairman of the board for Carey Services. She enjoyed spending time with her family, doing needle point, reading, gardening and traveling to Siesta Keys, Florida.

Lora Nell is survived by her husband of 63 years, Kenneth Spence, Fairmount, IN; daughter, Sheri (Max) Engle, Fairmount, IN; 3 Granddaughters: Amber (David) Amick, Stanton, NE and their children, Dylan, Dawson, and Abigail; Sara (Aaron) Caudell, Fairmount, IN and their children, Boston and Bristol; Bethany (Brock) Massey, Fairmount, IN and their daughter, Quinn. Step-grandsons: Alix (Kelley) Engle, Sharpsville, IN and their children, Jett, Gage and Livia; Beau (Sara) Engle, Fairmount, IN and their children, Josie, Colt and Porter. 1 sister: Wilma Brookshire, Marion, IN; 2 half sisters: Pam (Tom) Goe, Muncie, IN; Marilyn Bell, Texas; 1 half brother: Jack (Celeste) Smith, Anderson, IN; 3 sister-in-laws: Janice Smith, Jalapa, IN; Donna Clock, Fairmount, IN; Roberta (Jim) Barkdull, Plymouth, IN; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by her brother Max Jay Smith.
