Lonza Frank Pope’s earthly journey began on November 24th, 1955, in Talladega County, Alabama to the parents of Sam Pope and Lucille Smith Pope. Lonza was affectionately known as Rolla by family and friends. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and united with Mountain Home Baptist Church, Sycamore, Alabama. Lonza, was a faithful member and was a part of the Mountain Home Male Chorus and Laymen’s.
Lonza received his formal education in the Talladega County School System, attending Phyllis Wheatley High School. After school, Lonza worked various jobs before being employed with ECC Marble Quarry in Sylacauga, Alabama for 10 years. He later was employed with Talladega County Road Department until his retirement after 25 years of labor.
Along Lonza’s life journey he met the love of his life, Ms. Cathy Player and they united in Holy Matrimony in 1980. Lonza’s love for people never allowed him to meet a stranger, he loved his job family, church family, neighbors and friends. He adored his loving wife, kids, grandkids, sisters, brothers, and family.
Lonza departed this walk of life on October 10th, 2022, at his residence, surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam & Lucille Pope, brothers, Louis Pope, Gary Wayne Pope, Joseph Pope, Sam Pope, and Jerry Pope and sister, Beatrice Pope.
His love will forever be cherished by his loving wife of 42 years, Cathy Player Pope of Childersburg, AL; children, Frankie (Ieshia) Pope of Stone Mountain, GA and Pearlita (Emmett Perez) Garrett of Madison, AL; siblings, Dora Pope Nix of Childersburg, AL, Clarence (Faye) Pope, Robert Pope, both of Childersburg, AL, and Gene (Janet) Pope of Sylacauga, AL; one loving aunt, Pearlie Mae (Joe) Ashley of Sylacauga, AL; sister in law, Tina Leonard, and Dorothy Whiteside; brother in law, Gary (Carolyn) Player; grandchildren, Malashia Ledford, Aniyia Weed, Alayiah Pope, Bella Garrett, Destyn “Daisy” Garrett, and A’Lani Pope; and a host of other relatives and friends.
