Lois Maxine Clifton, 81, of Elkhart, passed on to be with her Lord at 9:55 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at the Golden Living Center with her family by her side, after having been ill for some time.

She was born in Tulsa, Okla., on March 28, 1930, to the late Nelson and Leona (Ferguson) Johnson. On Oct. 20, 1951, she became the loving bride of Pastor Lewis J. Clifton in Gary, Ind. He survives her at home. They later moved to Elkhart, where she spent more than 20 years being the “pastor’s wife” at Elkhart’s Calvary Assembly of God Church.

Also surviving are her daughter, Sheryl A. (Paul) Carlson and son David L. (Susan) Clifton, both of Elkhart; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. A brother, William Johnson, precedes her in death.

Lois remained faithful and true to her service within the church, where she was active in many of the women’s prayer groups, played piano and spent a lot of time ministering and counseling to the ladies in the congregation. Her gentle ways and peaceful demeanor endeared her to nearly everyone she met, and she cheerfully accepted the responsibilities that went along with being the pastor’s wife.
