Mrs. Lois M. (Fasolas) Mitman passed away on Saturday, 1
October 2016 in Fredericksburg, VA. She was born on April
9, 1917, in Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania, to James Joseph and
Ida May (Tallant) Fasolas. She was the widow of the late Army
Col. Floyd B. Mitman, Jr., whom she married in 1942.
While Floyd was serving as a Army Chemical Corps Officer
overseas during World War II, Lois taught elementary
school near Philadelphia and lived with her parents. After
the war, Lois and their two children then accompanied Col. Mitman
on military assignments worldwide, to include in Beirut, Lebanon,
Bangkok Thailand, and across the United States from Maryland to
Utah. During a period of 26 years until Floyd’s retirement from
the Army, the Mitman family only once lived in the same place for
more than three years.
Finally, in 1974, Lois and Floyd retired to Cocoa Beach, Florida,
where Lois greatly enjoyed sunbathing, bowling, tennis, volunteering at
the local hospital, playing bridge and doing crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her daughter Linda Westerhoff of Spotsylvania,
Virginia and son, Floyd (wife Debbie) of Beltsville, Maryland. She
is remembered fondly by her three grandchildren, Kathryn Leigh
(husband Grover) Gibson of Fredericksburg, VA, Jeffrey Bert
Westerhoff of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, and James Floyd
Mitman (fiancée Sally Krakau) of Evanston, Illinois, as well as
four great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother,
James Eugene Fasolas, in 1997.
