Gilmore City Lois E. Hough, 89 of Gilmore City, died Tuesday March 25 at the Rolfe Care Center, Rolfe, IA.
Lois Rhoades was born June 20, 1918 on the family farm northeast of WaKeeney, Kansas. She was the ninth of ten children born to John Timothy and Roxie (McAtee) Rhoades. She was raised on the family farm and graduated from high school in Wakeeney. On July 28, 1940 she was united in married to Claude E. Hough of Wakeeny, Kansas. Lois was a homemaker, cook, daycare provider, and mother to many. During her life she remembered events such as the prohibition, the great depression of 1929, the Dust Bowl and WWII. As a child she rode to church in a horse drawn wagon with a buffalo robe for warmth; as an adult she saw men walk on the moon.
Lois is survived by her daughter Priscilla and Larry Meyer of Gilmore City, IA, son Dan and Barbara Hough of Fayetteville, Arkansas, daughter Kathleen and Jack Miller of Greeley, Colorado, and son Roy of Gilmore City, twelve grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Lois was preceded in death by her childhood family, her husband Claude, Hough, and one great grandchild. She moved to Gilmore City in 1989 and had been a resident of the Rolfe Care Center the past three years.
