Lloyd Robert Reed, Sr. 95, passed away on October 24, 2018. He is reunited in heaven with Mary Jane, his wife of 72 years. Lloyd was born on May 11, 1923 in Manteno, Illinois. He was the youngest of 5 children born to George and Lucy Brown Reed. After the death of his parents, when Lloyd was 2 years old, he was raised by his uncle and maternal aunt, Price and Anna Hoewischer and lived in Cairo, Illinois until 1972 when his job relocated him to Charlotte, NC.
Lloyd was a veteran of World War II. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1943-1945 and achieved the rank of Corporal. He served 25 months overseas in Burma China, India Theater as a crew chief and aerial engineer on C-46, C-47 and B-25 aircraft. He received 3 Bronze Stars, an Air Medal, a Distinguished Unit Citation and a Good Conduct Medal. As a member of the Hump Pilots Association he was also awarded a pair of Crew Chief Wings of The Chinese Air Force by Tang Fei, General, and ROCAF.
Mr. Reed was an active parishioner and volunteer at St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Charlotte, NC until his health no longer permitted him to volunteer. He was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Lloyd was also an Honorary Kentucky Colonel.
Lloyd is survived by his 3 children and their spouses, Bob and Judy Reed of Memphis, TN, Beth Ann Reed and Jim Little of Harrisburg, NC and Terry and Jo Ann Reed of Concord, NC. He was PawPaw to 9 grandchildren, and 18 great- grandchildren who are left to cherish his memory.
