Lloyd J. Fillio, 86, passed away Monday, June 8, in his residence.

He was born Jan. 12, 1929, in Elkhart, to Thomas E. Fillio Sr. and Rosa (Loney) Fillio.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Helen I.(Sutterby) Fillio; one daughter, Jackie (Howard) Elliott of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; three sons, John (Jamie) Fillio of Indianapolis, Michael J. (Lois) Fillio of Elkhart and Thomas E. Fillio of South Bend; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Thomas E. Fillio Jr., Corvin Fillio, Rex Fillio and Walter Loney.

Lloyd was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he received a bachelor’s degree in music education and in English.

He was later employed by the Selmer Co. in the Vincent Bach Division for more than 35 years prior to his retirement. He was a member of Kane Lodge, Scottish Rite and the Orak Shrine.

He was a frequent driver of the Shriner van that took children to Chicago.

For several years, Lloyd was instrumental in organizing and playing in the Heart City Brass and in the Lloyd’s Weinerschnitzel German Band. He was a member of the Elkhart Municipal Band for over 55 years and was also a past president of the band. He was a member at Hillcrest United Methodist Church and served as choir and music director at Bethel EUB Church.

Lloyd proudly played taps at funerals for veterans for more than 20 years as a member of the DAV 19 Honor Guard.
