Lloyd Stires 96, of Youngsville died of natural causes on Saturday October 20, 2007 at home in Youngsville, NC. He outlived his beloved wife, Viola, who died in 2006. They were married for 73 years. Lloyd was born in Fahrenburg, Missouri, to Pearl Nolan and Charles Columbus Stires. Raised in a bygone era, Lloyd remembered old timey trains with velvet seats and oil lights. While living in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, he recalled Indians riding on horses into town on Saturday nights, raising a ruckus, and in Lilburn, Missouri, people in horse and buggies on Armistice Day in 1918, Shooting shotguns up and down the street. As a youth Lloyd learned to work hard on the family farm, hoeing, picking cotton, plowing and working the corn in Arkansas, and he endeavored always to do his best. An intelligent young man, Lloyd skipped two grades in school. Financial needs required his leaving school in Missouri to go to Michigan to work for Chevrolet Motor Co. Lloyd self-educated himself and acquired good managerial and financial skills. Lloyd’s willing to work at anything sustained his family during hard times. His industriousness, resourcefulness, and perseverance propelled him forward in times of prosperity. Lloyd owned an aluminum window business, and worked for Lockheed Aircraft in California and Georgia, and as a general manger in Japan. He traveled extensively covering five continents during his life time. Lloyd loved golfing, reading, and the beautiful outdoors. His daily walks would often include a seven mile route to keep in shape after his retirement.

Survivors include his two sons, David Stires and his wife Joyce of New Smyrna Beach, FL and Chuck Stires and his wife Connie of Youngsville, NC five grandchildren, Sherri Stires Martin and Jon Stires both of New Smyrna Beach, FL, Caryn Stires Winterton of Youngsville, NC, Christine Stires Diaz of Amarillo, TX and Craig Stires of Thailand, and fourteen great-grandchildren.
