Sergeant Lisa Zuk (Moore) passed away on Monday, November 30, 2015, in Kalamazoo, MI, at the Rose Arbor Hospice Residence from a long and hard fought battle with breast cancer.

Lisa is survived by her husband, Zachary Zuk; her daughter, Zoey Zuk; her parents Michael and Linda Moore; her brother and his wife, Scott and Jennifer Moore; a niece, Teagan Moore; father-in-law, Theodor Zuk; mother-in-law, Nanci Taylor; sister-in-law, Kelsi Zuk; and many other loving family and friends.

Lisa was born on August 10, 1978, in Kalamazoo, MI. She graduated from Gull Lake High School in 1996. Lisa made many friends throughout her school years and enjoyed many years in band playing the flute. She also participated in track, running the 200 meter dash, the 4 X 100 meter relay, and the 4 X 200 meter relay. Lisa graduated from Western Michigan University and the Kalamazoo Valley Regional Police Academy. She was hired with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety on February 19, 2001. Lisa worked as a Public Safety Officer, Recruiter, Field Training officer, K9 Handler, and ended her career as Sergeant.

Lisa earned the respect and love of many people due to her thoughtful and caring personality. She felt all people deserved to be treated with respect. She had a clear vision of right and wrong and had the strength to stand her ground. She had a great sense of humor and those close to her were fortunate to witness this. Her laugh was contagious and could be heard across the room, and her smile would light up that room.

Lisa enjoyed many activities, mostly outside. Lisa, Zac, and Zoey enjoyed going for walks on their property. Lisa posted many pictures of their adventures. She loved camping with her horse and enjoyed many hours of riding and playing dominos with the longtime friends Kathy, Kathie, Kitty, Lori, Aunt Kris, and her mom. Even when she was too sick to ride, she would join them for evenings around the campfire. She spent many happy days boating with Zac and Zoey. It was always a joy to watch Zoey as she got braver and braver in the water. Hot air balloon crewing for her father was another favorite activity. She looked forward to being a part of the July 4th Field of Flight in Battle Creek each year. Lisa especially enjoyed spending time with her great friends Gretchen, Kristie, and Jen. You could be sure if they were together they would be having fun. Lisa also had a great love of fox hunting. She had been a member of the Battle Creek Hunt since she was 5 years old and has developed many wonderful friendships. There was nothing better to Lisa than running her horse through the woods, jumping jumps, viewing the fox and coyotes, and joining her friends for drinks and dinner afterwards. She was always gracious to new members or guests and went out of her way to make them feel welcome and be safe.

Lisa’s biggest joys were meeting and marrying Zac and giving birth to Zoey. Anyone who has met Zoey can tell what great parents they are. She is a ray of sunshine and a joyful child.

Family has always been important to Lisa. Holidays and birthdays were always celebrated with family and extended family. Much love was exchanged and Lisa had strong, lasting relationships with her family and felt their love throughout her life. She was lovingly welcomed into Zac’s family. She thought the world of Zac’s sister Kelsi and was looking forward to being in her wedding next July. She became an aunt last July when her brother Scott and his wife Jen had a little girl. They named her Teagan Lisa Marie Moore after her. She was honored.

Lisa was an inspiration to many by her determination to beat her cancer. She was a fighter and never gave up until she took her last breath. Lisa shared her journey on Facebook with the hope that others would learn from her experiences. She was the first in her family to be diagnosed with the BRCA 1 Gene and we feel she has saved many of her cousin’s lives by sharing this information and encouraging them to be tested. Zac has been her champion throughout this journey, and Lisa has said she couldn’t have a better husband and supporter.

Lisa and her family have been supported through the last two years of her life by Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, Kalamazoo Township Police Department, family and friends. This support has been greatly appreciated and made this journey much easier. Their help included a trip to Disney World, monetary help with medical bills, many, many meals that have been coming for two years and putting up Christmas lights for Zoey. They have helped in many other ways and we can’t thank them enough.
