Linda Redmond Cook passed away on June 28, 2020 at her home in Kalamazoo, Michigan, at the age of 80 years old, due to complications following surgery. She was born May 14, 1940 in Crossville, TN to J.B. and Marguerite Redmond.
Linda attended the George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, TN graduating in 1963 and later attended Western Michigan University, obtaining a Master’s in Library Science. She worked as a middle school teacher in the Kalamazoo Public Schools and then as a librarian with the Kalamazoo Public Library. She was a strong advocate for collective bargaining rights and participated in strikes and walk outs to ensure fair pay and working conditions for librarians and teachers in the Kalamazoo Public Schools system.
She was a member of the Michigan Education Association, Daughters of the American Revolution and supported many local theater and historic programs throughout her life, including Kalamazoo Air Zoo, Kalamazoo Civic Theater and Farmer’s Alley Theater group. She was devoted to her extended family, loved old houses and historic preservation, and enjoyed scenic drives on old roads and trails. She remained curious throughout her life and would routinely read up on topics of interest to her grandchildren so that she could discuss their favorite topics with them.
On June 19, 1975, Linda married Carl E. Cook who preceded her in death on August 23, 1996. She was also preceded in death by her parents. Linda is survived by two daughters, Julia Driver, her husband Roy Sorensen and their sons, Maxwell and Zachary Sorensen, and Janet Driver, her husband Dan Hyde and their son, Stephen Hyde; five stepchildren, Frank Cook and his sons, Tom, David, Michael, and Steven, Randy Cook and his children, Sarah and Joe, Emma Marie Cook and her children, Alex, Pammy and Ken, Pamela Landis and her son Michael, and Grant Cook and his daughters, Jenna and Megan; two sisters, Judy & Joel Dobson, and Carol Redmond & Robert Scales; a brother, Jeff & Shelia Redmond; and Linda’s first husband, William Henry Driver.
