Lina Florio Eastman
Lina Florio Eastman of Riverton, Connecticut passed away peacefully on October 23 in Simsbury CT at the age of 103. Lina was born on October 3, 1919 in Simsbury to Giuseppe and Placida Cialfi Florio. She was the middle child with two older brothers and a younger sister and brother. She spent her childhood living near Highland Lake in Winsted in an Italian neighborhood.
Lina met and fell in love with John Eastman when she was nineteen years old. Her parents embraced this American Yankee they called “Johnny Bull”. Lina and John were married in 1939, and settled in the Riverton Community where they raised three daughters together with the Eastman Family.
Lina was an advocate for young women, seeing that her daughters had every opportunity to achieve independence whether it be through education, vocation or community engagement. She was a Girl Scout Leader, Classroom Mother and Band Parent. She volunteered for the Red Cross and supported her husband, John, in many civic affairs.
Lina was an exceptional craftsman learning how to knit beautiful sweaters and afghans. She learned how to weave rush seats for antique Hitchcock Chairs. She established The Summer Kitchen, a gift shop in Riverton.
Lina was preceded in death by her husband, John in 2008. She is survived by her daughters, Carole Eastman Zegel (William),Gainesville, FL; Cynthia Eastman Williams, Riverton; and Susan Moore Eastman, Simsbury; her grandchildren, Laura Zegel, Amanda Nelson, William Zegel, Elisabeth Scheintaub. John Williams, and Elizabeth Buck; and her nine great grandchildren.
