Lillie Mae Sims practiced her nursing for many years at the Washington Hospital Center, located in Washington DC. Her nursing assignments included general medical care through supporting physicians performing surgical procedures. In addition, she assisted military personnel at Walter Reed Hospital and also persons confined to their homes as a private duty nurse. In 1973, Lillie Sims worked as the Nurse for the Thomas Johnson Middle School (formerly known as Thomas Johnson Junior High) until retirement in 1999.
Over the years, Mother Sims faithfully served in many ministries including the Pastor’s Aide, John Wesley Johnson Choir (now the Fellowship Corale), New Members, Vacation Bible School (Nurse), Nurses Ministry, Women’s Day Chairperson leading the First 100 Women in White, Altar Counselor, Deaconess Ministry and Marriage Counselor. After taking the initial Sisters In Discipleship (SID) training, she became a facilitator from 1998 to 2016. In recent years, Lillie Sims was also acknowledged as a “Mother” of the church.
Lillie Mae Sims leaves to cherish her memories, husband, Reverend Thomas H. Sims, Jr.; children, Dwayne R. Sims, Pastor Gregory M. Sims (Ellen), Kimberly L. Lee and Daryl H. Sims; grandchildren, Tamika C. Sims, Sean R. Sims, Brian E. Sims, Warren T. Sims (Kametra), James T. Sims, Gretchen A. Sims and Kevin L. Lee, II; seven great grands, two great great grands, Jan Vincent (Goddaughter) and a host of nephews, nieces, family and friends.
