Mrs. Pollard peacefully passed away at her residence in Apple Valley, CA.
Lillie Marie Brown was born in Naldosto, Georgia on March 12, 1922 to John and Annie Brown. She spent her childhood on the family farm in Haskell, Oklahoma.
After graduation from high school, she moved to live with her older brother in Los Angeles, California. She enrolled at UCLA and worked various jobs, including a cap and hat factory. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree from UCLA in Business Administration. Lillie began her career in real estate selling land in Antelope Valley, California.
In 1972, Lillie moved to San Diego, California where she joined Bethel Memorial A.M.E.
She was employed by Pacific Bell Telephone Company and continued to sell real estate with Advance Realty. She retired from Pacific Bell after many years and she remained active in the real estate market until her health began to fail.
Lillie was a proud, strong willed, independent woman who did not hesitate to speak her mind. She loved dressing stylishly and had an air of confidence. She enjoyed occasional trips to the casinos and hosting dinners for her friends. Lillie traveled throughout Europe on several trips, often traveling alone.
As an active voice for her community, Lillie often spoke before the San Diego City Council on matters as varied as the “Toilet to Tap” program to Stop Signs for Emerald Hills. She was President of the Emerald Hills Council, a member of the Southeast Development Committee and one of the original “Friends” of the Malcom X Library from its inception. She was a Lifetime Member of the NAACP. Lillie was a “Watchdog” for the community always making sure that Southeast San Diego was well served by both the local politicians and the police department.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Annie Brown; brothers, McKinley Brown, Leonard Brown and Willie Brown; and sister, Isabelle Jackson.
Lillie is survived by two nephews, Leonard Brown, Jr. of Victorville, CA and Alvin Brown of Oklahoma; four nieces, Tharmaple Davis of Apple Valley, CA, Renee A. Lacour of Chicago, IL, Inez Johns of Compton, CA and Catherine Cole of Carson, CA; eight great nieces and nephews; a cousin, Bonnie Johnson of San Bernardino, CA, other relatives and many friends. She will be sorely missed.
