Biography Lillian Louise Nicholas “Niki” Hughes, 87, passed away on Monday, July 18, 2011, in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Lillian was born and grew up in Richmond, Virginia, the daughter of Roy Nicholas and Maize Backer Nicholas, graduating from Richmond’s John Marshall High School in 1941.Working at the Richmond Army Air Base in 1942, she met Lieutenant Ray Hughes from Deming, New Mexico. They were married in 1946 in Richmond after he returned from the Pacific. In 1948 they moved to Deming where Lillian worked for the Victoria Land & Cattle Company and the Tilden Tool Company. Lillian was always an advocate for animals and especially loved her cats. She and Ray raised five children.
Lillian was much loved and will be greatly missed by those surviving her.
Survivors include her husband, Ray; her children, Charles of El Paso, Texas; Roy of Wichita, Kan.; Holli and John Strand of Deming; James, of Las Cruces and Tracy and Karen Garcia of Santa Fe, and her grandson, Preston Strand of Tucson, Ariz.
