Lloyd Mifflin “Scotty” Scott was born on January 20, 1928 in San Francisco, California to Elizabeth Scott (later Green). Scotty led an active childhood, in which he played sports, learned to sail, and participated in Boy Scouts (where he earned his Eagle Scout award) and in Sea Scouts. Scotty graduated early from Tamalpais High School in January 1945.
With World War II raging, Scotty joined the United States Merchant Marines and shipped out as an able seaman with the Howell Cobb, a Liberty ship, from Oakland, California. He served in and around the Philippine islands through the end of World War II and later shipped out on two other merchant marine vessels, the General HG Hodges and the General MM Patrick. He mustered out of the U.S. Merchant Marines in January 1947.
Scotty enlisted in aviation cadet school in October 1948, completed basic and advanced pilot flight training, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the newly formed United States Air Force in September 1949. After additional training and certification in the F-86 Sabre jet fighter, Scotty was deployed to Japan and then to Korea during the Korean War, serving with the 12th Fighter Bomber Squadron. Subsequent assignments with the Air Force took him to Florida, Alabama, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Texas (3 assignments), Alaska, Ohio, Thailand (during the Vietnam War), Virginia, and his final active duty assignment in Wiesbaden, West Germany. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1977 and settled in Merritt Island, Florida.
Scotty is survived by his wife, Minnie (Clements) Scott, of Cocoa Beach; his son Lloyd and wife Cheryl, of Boone, North Carolina; his daughter Debby and husband Carlos Atencio of Cocolalla, Idaho; his son Joseph, of Charleston, South Carolina; seven grandchildren (Jennifer, Jeremy, Katie, Kelly, Robert, Tori, and Trenton), and three great-grandchildren (Ethan, Avery, and Rives).
Scotty was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Joseph and Elizabeth Green; by his wife of over 50 years, Joline A. Scott; and by his son, David.
