Lewis S. Rhodes, Jr transitioned peacefully on July 18. We know he is with the Center of his Joy.
Lewis was born on January 17, 1926 in Washington, DC, the son of Lewis S. Rhodes Sr and Ruth V. Rhodes.
After graduating from high school, Lewis joined the Army. He served in World War II where he was stationed in the Philippines. He worked as a communication specialist. When he returned home he joined the Army Reserves, serving a total of 37 years in the armed forces. He retired from the Army with the rank of Master Sergeant.
He was also employed by for the Federal Government. He worked as an Equal Employment Opportunity Officer until his retirement in 1984. He was an avid tennis player for 40 years and won many trophies. He also enjoyed swimming and senior volleyball. In his later years he played Table Tennis. He became a Senior Olympian earning medals for table tennis. Lewis was also a member of Toastmasters International.
Although growing up Baptist, Lewis joined Jerusalem United Methodist Church after marrying Annie so they would be worshipping together. At Jerusalem, Lewis served in the capacities of: Church Lay Leader; Bible Study Leader for 19 years; Chairman of the Evangelism Committee; Trustee Board Member; Member of the Methodist Men; Member of the Men’s Choir.
He also served as President and Vice President of the Willing 3 C’s Club at the Rockville Senior Center.
In his passing Lewis leaves to mourn his wife of 49 years Annie P. Rhodes; sons, Lewis S. Rhodes III, Winston W. Rhodes (Mary Rhodes), Donald Rhodes (Paulette Rhodes), Daniel Rhodes (Tina Rhodes); a daughter, Dana M. Hackey; Daughter in law, Robin Hackey; Grandchildren, Salim Rhodes, Ayana Morton (Eric Morton), Kenya Rhodes, Natasha Williams, Peter Rhodes, Govia Rhodes, Douglas M. Hackey III, Joel Burns (Victoria Burns), Andrew M. Hackey, Milan Rhodes; Great Grandchildren, Douglas M. Hackey IV, Kaliegh Hackey, Trina Hackey, Aenea Morton, Wyatt Morton, Genevieve Burns as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Lewis is preceded in death by his sister Margaret Hatton, daughter Karen Williams and son Douglas M. Hackey, Jr.
