Leroy A. “Slim” Heusel, 93, of Peru, passed away March 2, 2014 at Manor Court of Peru.
Mr. Heusel was born May 1, 1920 in Lostant to William and Rena (Zimmerman) Heusel. He married Marie Nagel on April 27, 1946 in Tonica. Mr. Heusel attended Lostant and Rutland schools. He worked as an auto mechanic at Harry’s Comparon before entering the service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps serving in the African and European Theaters during World War II. He was a member of the Peru American Legion and LaSalle Veterans of Foreign Wars. He and his wife owned and operated Slim’s Service Station on Fifth and Peoria Streets in Peru for 35 years. He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Peru where he served on the Church Council, was the treasurer for St. John’s Sunday School for 25 years, he served as a greeter, was treasurer of Men of Mission and was active in the OWL’s Group and the Sewing Group. He enjoyed fishing, camping, woodworking and quilting.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Marie of Peru; two daughters, Sheryl (Charles) West of Orlando, FL and Joan (James) Rowney of Marseilles; three grandchildren, Tara (Steven) Jackson, Sara (Danny) Hritz and David Rowney; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Vernon Heusel of Chicago and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother and sister in law, Robert and Julie Heusel and sister-in-law, Dorthea Heusel.
