The son of Wendell and Francis (Emery) Kono, he was born June 27, 1934 in Newton. Leroy married JoAnne Forbes on October 16, 1954. He was a lifelong resident of Newton and was self-employed as a concrete contractor before retiring in 1996.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Clifford Petermeier; and niece, Lynn Ann Meyer.
Survivors include his daughters, Cindy (and Bob) Webster, Sandy (and Doug) Bronner, Shelly (and Tony) Edwards, and Kristin (and Jeff) Morrow, all of Newton; his grandchildren, Jason (and Mindy) Webster, Tony Webster, Ryan Morrow, Amber Edwards, Aaron Edwards, Adam Morrow, Angela (and Mike) Killen, Anthony “Buddy” Edwards II, Dannabelle Bronner; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Evelyn Petermeier, Jean (and Norman) Meyer, Judy (and Jeff) Conn, Wendy (and Don) Crady, and Sally (and Terry) Berger; and many nieces and nephews.
