LeRoy Chaffee Jr., 80, passed away on the afternoon of July 29 surrounded by his loving family.

LeRoy was born in Bristol, Ind., on Aug. 8, 1934, to LaRoy and Bertha (Cloud) Chaffee.

LeRoy attended school for several years in Bristol and then later moved to Constantine, Mich., where he graduated from Constantine High School.

Always a hard worker, LeRoy pursued different careers, particularly enjoying the sales profession. He eventually opened his own car sales lot in Elkhart, which he ran for several years. His entrepreneurial spirit later led him to open his truck cap manufacturing business in 1975, which he successfully ran full-time up until his illness at the age of 80.

LeRoy was a lifetime member of the John Birch Society and a strong advocate and educator for our constitutional rights and freedoms. He was deeply passionate about his patriotism and love for our country and its history, and he strived to pass that along to his family, friends and all those he encountered.

A strong and firm father, LeRoy raised his daughters to be independent, self-reliant, hard-working citizens. His sternness was far surpassed by his love for his family, and he will always be remembered for his ability to create a fun atmosphere with his boyish mischievousness. If there were more fathers like him today, our country would be a much better place.

LeRoy is survived by two daughters, Susan (Doyle) Yoder of Goshen and Laurie (Brad) Eads of Bristol; five grandsons, Nate Yoder, Tyler Yoder, Elijah Shaffer, Jacob (Jessica) Shaffer and Aaron Shaffer; two great granddaughters, Emma and Lucy Shaffer; two step-grandchildren, Grant and Cassie Eads; and his beloved nephews and nieces.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his sweetheart of 38 years, Willie Wallin; a daughter, Deborah; his parents; two brothers, Brady and Russell; and three sisters, Eunice Chaffee, Marlene Porzelius and Thelma Jacobs.
