Leonor (Roman) Toro, 80, of Middletown, beloved wife of Carlos L. Toro, passed away on Friday, April 3rd at Water’s Edge Center for Health and Rehab. Born in Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of the late Roque and Leonor (Morales) Roman. Leonor lived in Bridgeport and moved to Spain, she lived there for seven years and returned to the United States to reside in Middletown in 1994. She was a member of Saint Francis of Assisi in Middletown. Leonor worked with the state of Connecticut and was the Coordinator of the Migratory Ethnic/Arts Program that created material for the teachers who taught the migrant farmer’s children. Her material was used nationwide. She was also the Commissioner of the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities, Secretary of the Board of Education in Bridgeport, President of the Bilingual and Cultural Association, President of the Puerto Rican Parade in Bridgeport, President of the Parent Association Statewide. She also fought for the lunch program and Bilingual Education in Bridgeport. Leonor is survived by seven daughters and one son, Cynthia Weissman of Scarsdale, NY, Carmen Richtarich of Monroe, Carla P. Toro and Claudia Harris both of Cromwell, Carlos Toro of Orlando, FL, Carmen (Freddy) Toro-Gonzalez, Virginia Toro-Evans and Jeannette Toro-Rivera, all from Puerto Rico; nineteen grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren and six brothers.
