Leonard Portnoy was born December 18, 1928 to Ethel and Peter Portnoy in Detroit, Michigan. He earned both his Bachelor and Juris Doctor Degree at Wayne State University and attended its law school in the 1950’s. He served in the U.S. Army 1948-1952, serving in the Judge Advocate General’s Office. He attained the rank of Sergeant (T-2). He and his cousin, Robert Portnoy practiced law together in Detroit in the 1960’s. In 1969 he was hired as a staff attorney at the Bay-Midland Legal Aid Office in Bay City, Michigan and later became a Bay County assistant prosecutor and Friend of the Court. He retired in 1995. Community affiliations included Elks Lodge 88 and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 103, both in Bay City. He and Irene Beyst married in 1970.  He is survived by his wife Irene, son Mitchell Portnoy (from his first marriage) of Atherton, CA, and Scottsdale; granddaughter Mia Tamar Portnoy of Scottsdale, and brothers Harold Portnoy, M.D., and Bernard Portnoy, both of Florida.
