Leonard Nathan Hunter was born in Coweta County to one of its historic families on June 22, 1928. He was the son of the late Charlie Nathan and Ella McArthur Vick Hunter.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings Richard Edmond Hunter, Barnell Hunter Vick, and Lillian Hunter Evans. Born into a family whose roots were deeply entrenched in making a living off the land, he had a great appreciation for the good earth and up until just before his death, he was tilling the earth in anticipation of the planting season for himself and his friends. His appreciation for the opportunities his country had given him led him to serve in the United States Army, Fourth Division in Germany. The young man who would come to be known as “Babo” was a person who early on discovered he loved baseball. It was a sport he pursued throughout his life in the Tri-County League and at age 50, he played softball on senior teams. This pursuit took him all over the country. Only when he sustained a hamstring injury at the young age of 79 did he realize it was time to lay down the bat. He loved the comradery of the game. Always competitive, he insisted on fair play and fair umpiring. He was known to vigorously discuss certain calls with the umpires! Babo worked for Southern Mills, The Georgia Stove Company, and retired from Coweta County. He was instrumental in the operation of the first animal shelter for the county. Throughout his working career, he was an active farmer and cattleman. He was a man of quiet but abiding faith and a loyal member of White Oak Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church where he had served as a deacon. He expressed his faith simply, “I have been blessed. The Man Upstairs has been good to us”. His meditations were carried out in the fields and pastures he so lovingly tended and which he saw as a method of stewardship for being entrusted with their care. Leonard Nathan Hunter was a devoted and caring husband to his wife Anna Sue Young Hunter whom he married on August 19, 1956. He was an exemplary and diligent father to his daughters Susan Lynne Hunter Dodds and her husband Mark David Dodds and Lisa Grace Hunter Houston and her husband Michael Patrick Houston. He was loved by his grandchildren Nathaniel David Dodds and his wife Carly, James Nicholas Dodds, Zachary Michael Houston, and Gregory Michael Houston.
