Leonard L. Schmidt of Deshler, NE the son of Fred and Helene (Krenke) Schmidt was born August 4, 1932 in Hebron, NE. He departed this life Monday September 15, 2008 at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Lincoln, NE at the age of 76 years.
Leonard attended Trinity Lutheran School in Friedensau, NE through the 8th grade, and graduated from Deshler High School with the class of 1950. After high school he returned home to help his dad on the family farm. In 1953 Leonard was drafted in the United States Army serving in Korea. After his discharge from the service, he started as a substitute rural mail carrier in the Deshler area, when a full time position became available in Fairbury he took it. Leonard worked there until an opening came up in the Deshler area. Leonard carried mail from 1971 to 2001, just over 30 years. Leonard helped his brother Fred on the farm when he could. He retired from farming in 1999.
