Leonard John Kopec passed away peacefully on April 12th at the age of 86. Born in Cleveland, Ohio on October 14th 1931 to Veronica (Hajec) and John Kopec, the youngest sibling of Ben Kopec and Edna Kopec. Len grew up in Cleveland, attended South High school, and lettered in baseball; after High School graduation he joined the US Air Force, was stationed at Lowry Air Force base in Denver, Colorado and was honorably discharged in January 1955. During his time in the Air Force he met Jeanne Gaugler and they were married in January 1955. The young couple settled in Denver where Leonard completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Accounting at Denver University. Leonard then began a career in the information technology industry and worked at a number of different companies over his career including Midwest Oil Corporation, Ideal Basic Industries, Frontier Airlines, United Banks of Colorado and retired from Colorado Springs Utilities at the age of 70. During his professional career Leonard actively participated in the Data Processing Management Association, frequently speaking at association seminars and serving as Chapter president in 1970. In addition, he was a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors, a member of the State of Colorado Governor’s Advisory Committee on the State use of Automated Data Processing, and he also was an instructor at Metropolitan State College. Preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne. Leonard is survived by children Tom (Nadee) Kopec, Susan (Bill) Petri, Kathy DeVault; 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren.
