Leona E. Vogt passed away from natural causes on July 2, 2016 in Eagle, Idaho. Family members were present when she left her earthly home for her heavenly one. She was born to Lena and Otto Eckerman in Muskegon Heights, Michigan on July 25, 1921. She was the youngest of six children.

After graduating from high school, Leona moved to Boise, Idaho, where she attended Boise Business College (no longer in existence). While attending the College in the spring of 1941, she was nominated as their candidate for the “Boise Straw Hat Queen” contest, which she won. To this day her family views this as “very appropriate,” for she was always a lady and a lovely one at that. After college, she was employed by Gowen Field in the Signal Corps office.

In 1942, Leona married Harry Vogt. They raised three children, two boys and one girl. Harry was employed by US Department of Agriculture, which moved them from Washington State to Emmett, Idaho, to Moscow, Idaho where she worked for the Dry Pea and Lentil Commission, to Washington DC. While in DC, she worked at the Federal Reserve Board with an office in the infamous Watergate Building, at the same time as the break-in.

Leona joined the Eagle Senior Center, enjoying the exercise group, the pinochle games and noon meals. She held the office of Secretary for a number of years. She met Orville Burt at the Center; they were married nine years before he preceded her in death in 2007.

Always gracious, Leona commented daily how fortunate and thankful she was. She cared deeply about the welfare of others, remembering them in her prayers. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the team of caregivers who were there for her the past several months. She was a person of strong faith, believing in the power and strength of Jesus Christ’s redeeming love and the beauty and peace awaiting her in the place He prepared for her.

Leona is survived by a sister in Leland, Michigan; two sons, Ron (Donna) Vogt, Rochester Hills, Michigan; John (Anne) Vogt, Eagle; a daughter Janet (John) Schultz, Meridian; step daughter Janice Miller & family, Ogden, UT; step daughter Penny Barge & family, Federal Way, WA; eight grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
