Mr. Leon J Powers, 89, of Lanett passed peacefully from this life to his home in heaven Monday afternoon, February 26.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Powers, parents, Lon and Goldie Powers, sister, Frances, brothers Cooter, Buck, Jesse, and Allen.

He is survived by his sisters Dolly Williamson and Doris Lee. He is also survived by four daughters Gwyn Powers Barnes (Jay) Valley, AL, Lynn Powers Robles (Richard) Valley, AL, Bess Fincher Fulcher (Calvert) Pinehurst, NC, Penney Daniel (Dennis) Lanett, AL. Surviving grandchildren include Stephen Johnson of Astoria, NY, Amy Andrews Thomas (David) of Opelika, AL, and Bentley and Chloe Barnes of Valley, AL. Four great-grandchildren, Madeline Chase, Libbey Murphy, Brayden and Cayden Ricky Thomas also survive.

Leon spent 45 years as a productive employee of West Point-Pepperell in the Langdale Mill. He worked as a fixer in the mill where he helped train many new employees in addition to being a valued worker.

Before being limited by failing health, he was an active member of Huguley United Methodist Church where he served many years cooking for the Men’s breakfast. He was also very active in the church’s food outreach program, donating many meals to their First Friday lunch program for the less fortunate.

Leon was a good neighbor to many, always ready to provide assistance in times of need. An excellent cook, he was very fond of his garden where he shared his crops with his neighbors. He was very generous and loved to take care of his family.

Leon was a Korean War Veteran. He casted a big shadow even though he was a small man. He had a love for all people but especially fond for his children. He had an extra bright smile for each of them, and was never happier than when spending time with his grandchildren, all of whom loved him dearly. He will be sorely missed by family and friends alike.
