On June 7, 1925, on a warm day in Winston Salem, NC, another son was born named Leon Faulkner. Born to the late Rosa Bell Miller-Faulkner and Robert Faulkner, Sr.; who were extremely elated to bring home their second son. “Buster”, as he was most affectionately known, grew up with humble and modest beginnings as with most children of his generation. He received his education from area schools in Halifax County, Virginia.
On January 31, 1946, he entered into the United States Army where he remained until his honorable discharge. In 1950’s he relocated to Washington, DC where he was offered a career opportunity with Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to exude his passion as a connoisseur of the finest foods. He remained employed until he retired with tenure of 20+ years of service.
At an early age, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior. Upon moving to Washington, DC, he united and fellowshipped with Corinthian Baptist Church then later joined Mt. Sinai Baptist Church under the tutelage of the late Rev. David Durham.
Leon loved to laugh, have fun, clown around, take long drives, and simply hanging out with his family and friends. He also loved, what he called “To Burn”(ie. cook), as we gourmandized in anticipation. He showed and shared the secret ingredients on how to make his famous “Faulkner Chill” with his daughters’. But most of all, he took great pleasure in watching (including trash talking) the Washington Redskins.
He departed this life on June 17th (Father’s Day) at Fox Chase Nursing Home, in Silver Spring, MD, after battling and succumbing to a long illness. He was a determined and strong willed individual, never accepting “NO” for an answer.
He leaves to mourn six children, Pat Miller-Johnson, Leonard Faulkner (LaCarol), Melvin Faulkner (Pam), Claudia Crayton (Cordell), Arjetta “Dee Dee” Faulkner-Ekandem (Uyo), Vonetta “Tina” Faulkner and Rosalind “Rosie” Faulkner; one sister Undra James-Woods; six grandchildren, Tobias Johnson (Adriana), Derek Faulkner, LaKeisha Faulkner, Frankie Faulkner, Takirra Faulkner and Xavier Lipscomb; and one great-grandchild, Amaru Johnson and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by siblings Gergetha F. Hughes, Robert A. Faulkner, Jr., and Loryd Faulkner.
