Leo S. “George” English, 89, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin. He was a resident of Franklin and formerly of Friendswood.
Leo was born Sept. 23, 1923, in Worthington, Indiana to Forrest E. and Evelena E. (Hill) English.
Leo graduated from Southport H.S. in 1942.
He was a World War II Navy veteran and was stationed in Hawaii as a Pharmacist Mate right after Pearl Harbor occurred. After 3 years in the Navy, he returned to work at Ballard Ice Cream Company on North Alabama St. in downtown Indianapolis. There he met his future wife, Edna M.Monday. They were married for 58 years. She passed away in October of 2007. Edna gave Leo the nickname of George and he was known as that to friends, family and co-workers for many years.
They lived in Friendswood, Indiana, on the Hendricks County side, before Heartland Crossing bought them out and they then moved into a duplex on the grounds of the Indiana Masonic Home in 2006.
He later worked in the parts department for Vestal Chevrolet in Mooresville and then for Nankivell Chevrolet, which later became Hubler Chevrolet. He retired from Hubler Chevrolet as the parts department manager in the early 1990s.
Leo was a 32nd-degree Mason and belonged to the Southport Lodge, where he achieved the Fifty Year Membership.
Leo enjoyed square dancing and in his later years, he and Edna, played in Kitchen Bands, and they even had a group of their own called “The Monday Tones”. He really enjoyed whistling with the bands and was quite good at remembering all the “old tunes”. He acquired the nickname of “The Whistler” while residing at the Masonic Home. He would always sing along and whistle when any special musical programs were presented at the Masonic Home. He always had a “Hello” to anyone passing by and was always very friendly to others. He was not one to complain or cause problems. He had a passion for Long John Silver’s food! He enjoyed, his whole life, “tinkering” (as he called it) with cars and anything mechanical or building little things to be used around the house. He was a kind, gentle, friendly man who enjoyed life!
Survivor include two children, Danny (Linda) McDaniel of Bargersville and Donna J.(Wayne) Thurman of Brownsburg, a sister, Nina (James) Goins of Beech Grove, four grandchildren, Lesa A.(Eric) Frazier of Pennsylvania, Darin K. (Katie) McDaniel of Calif., Tiffany (Chris) Delp of Florida and Nathan Thurman of Brownsburg and four great-grandchildren, Ethan and Lindsay Frazier and Elizabeth and Doug Delp.
