Leo Arthur Dunbar, 85, passed away peacefully with his family around him at his winter home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida on December 5, 2008. Mr. Dunbar was born on March 5, 1923 in Cadillac, Michigan and lived in the area his entire life. He grew up on a farm in Hobart, Michigan, where he would plow potatoes for his father and then go to work at their neighbor’s farm to earn money for things, like basketball shoes, that his parents could not afford. During the depression, his mother would often feed those who jumped off the trains near their farm, an act that taught him charity at an early age.

He graduated from Tustin High School in1941 where he played varsity basketball and baseball. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, delivering supplies to allied troops to many parts of the world. He married Betty Jean Norden on August 19, 1944. Mr.

Mr. Dunbar is preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Ella (Greenman) Dunbar, his sister, Marge Torrey, and brother, John. He is survived by his wife, Betty, his sister, Helen Hesselink, and his five children (and their spouses): Patti Taylor, Gary (Deborah) Dunbar, Dirk (Ulrike) Dunbar, David (Paula) Dunbar, and Shawn (Steve) Martemucci; 16 grandchildren: David Taylor, Chris Taylor, Taryn Taylor, Darbi Dunbar, Gary Dunbar, Jr., Jeremy Dunbar, Julia Dunbar, Annabelle Dunbar, Lindsay Dunbar, Laura Dunbar, Andrew Dunbar, Matthew Dunbar, Ryan Moon, Rachel Moon, Cristen Martemucci, and Nicholas Martemucci; and 3 great-grandchildren: Tyana Taylor, Seth Taylor, and Saydee Rubin.
