Lenwood L. (Whimpy) Thompson, 90, of 1030 Franklin St., died Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Highland Nursing Home, Laporte, where he had been a resident the past three years.
Whimpy and his wife, the former Marie D. Karichner, observed their 68th wedding anniversary on June 27, 2009.
Whimpy was a World War II Navy veteran serving on the USS San Jacinto aircraft carrier, along with former President George H. W. Bush. He was a life time member of the Keystone League and an avid hunter and fisherman.
After WW II, Whimpy worked at Richardson’s Buick, later becoming the owner and operator of Thompson’s Garage on Franklin Street until his retirement in 1984 after 19 years, then selling it to his son.
Born November 13, 1919 in Williamsport, he was the son of Nelson and Sarah Williams Thompson.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are a son, Danny L. (Lainie) of Williamsport; daughter, Claire A. Townsend of Wabash, IN; brother, Sterling of Wilkes-Barre; seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Whimpy was predeceased by brothers, Raymond and Burrows and sisters, Annie, Alberta and Jeanette.
