Lenox L. Reid, retired educator, and former resident of Bethlehem, PA, passed away peacefully on Sept. 3, 2022 at the age of 92 at Country Meadows in Easton, PA.   He was born on June 15th, 1930, in Long Branch, New Jersey, the son of Lenox S. and Aline (Young) Reid.  He is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Janet (Bolich).

 

Len graduated from Stroudsburg High School (PA) in 1948, where he played football, and sang in the chorus.  It was also at Stroudsburg High School that Len met the love of his life, Janet.  Len served in the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1952, being stationed in Okinawa during the Korean War as a member of the Signal Corp.  After being discharged from the army, Len and Janet married and settled in Stroudsburg, PA where Len attended East Stroudsburg State College on the GI Bill while also working at the A&P grocery store.  He graduated from ESSC with a teaching degree in 1956.

 

Len briefly taught at Sciota Elementary School near Stroudsburg before accepting his first permanent position, teaching Geography and Civics at a middle school in Middlesex New Jersey.  After four years in New Jersey, the family relocated to Venice, FL where Len taught the same subjects at Venice Junior High.  During the Venice years, the family spent several summers in Boone, NC where Len completed both the certification that qualified him to be a guidance counselor at Venice Junior High, and later a Master’s Degree which led to him becoming assistant principal.  Len next became principal of Bay Haven Elementary (Sarasota, FL) and then principal of Venice High School.  In 1971 the Reid’s returned to PA where Len was principal of Kutztown Area Junior High School for two years.  Len then took on the position of principal of Hamburg Area Junior High and High School, where he would remain until his retirement from education in 1985.

 

Following Len’s retirement, he and Janet relocated from Kutztown, PA to Cape May, NJ until 1996 when they relocated back to PA (Bethlehem) to be closer to family.  During his retirement years Len enjoyed traveling with Janet, golfing with his buddy Gary Reed, following sports, and spending time with friends and family.  He also held a number of part time jobs, including tour guide at the Cape May lighthouse, and donated many volunteer hours to Habitat for Humanity. Len was also a dedicated blood donor, giving gallons over his lifetime. Those who knew Len will remember him for his outgoing personality, kindness, generosity, sense of humor, and meticulous attention to detail.

 

Survivors: He is survived by three children: sons Todd (Janet)  of West Chester, PA, and Terry (Lisa) of Bellefonte, PA, and daughter Tracy of New York City; brother, Joe (Diane) Reid of Basking Ridge, NJ and a sister, Penny (Rick) Myers of Bay Head, NJ; four grandchildren Amanda (Tom) Cossentino of Havertown, PA, Jessica (Brandon) Jacobs of West Chester, PA, and Alex and Nicky Reid of Bellefonte; and one great-grandchild Natalie Cossentino.
