Leila Hamlin, (Age 94) of Bethesda, Maryland died peacefully in her sleep after a period of declining health on Wednesday, December 10, 2014.  She lived most of her life in Bethesda, Md. She described the area as a sleepy little town when she and her husband settled in Mohican Hills near Glen Echo. Leila was the beloved wife of the late Marvin Hamlin; mother of Carol (Paul) Melton, Robert (Margaret) Hamlin, Gary Hamlin,  Mark Hamlin, Steven (Linda) Hamlin and Lauren (Howard) Moore; Grandmother of Jeffrey (Sarah) Melton, Robert (Charlotte) Melton, Christina (William) Garrison, Edward Hamlin, Leila Hamlin, Eric Moore and Khrystina Moore DiBatista; Great Grandmother of Cameron Garrison, Aiden Garrison, Dawson Melton, Madeline Melton, Lillian Melton, Bobby Melton and Samantha Melton; Sister of Edna Dooley of Nashua, New Hampshire.

Leila was born in Somerset, New Hampshire. She and her parents Edward and Bertha Elwell moved to Nashua and raised four children; Edward Jr, John, Leila and Edna. World War II gave young women an opportunity to work toward the war effort. Leila came to DC to take a job with the FBI. She processed fingerprints of servicemen that were headed to war. Leila and Marvin Hamlin met at a Veterans’ dance when the WWII soldiers came home to Washington DC. Their love became a marriage on April 2, 1949 and lasted 45 years until Marvin’s death in 1994. Leila and Marvin had six children; Carol, Robert, Gary, Mark, Steven and Lauren, who grew up as an ‘All American Family’ in Mohican Hills, Maryland. She also had seven Grandchildren and seven Great Grandchildren. Leila was involved in the United Methodist Woman at what came to be known as Concord-St Andrews United Methodist Church where she served as Financial Officer for many years.
