On Saturday, April 2, 2022, Lawrence Thomas Covington of Hyattsville, Maryland, peacefully transitioned from labor to reward at Sibley Memorial Hospital, Capital Caring Hospice Center, Washington, DC. Lawrence was born on May 18, 1944, in Blenheim, South Carolina to the late Thomas and Annie Margaret Covington. He was one of four children and the youngest of their three sons.
Lawrence accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized and became a member of Cedar Fall Missionary Baptist Church, Blenheim, South Carolina. He was educated in the public school system in Bennettsville, SC, and attended Shiloh Baptist Church prior to relocating to Washington, DC. He attended Turner Memorial AME Church and later joined First Baptist Church of Marshall Heights. He married Nancy Carolyn Jackson and the couple was blessed with two children, a daughter and son.
Loved ones left to cherish his memory are his wife, Nancy; daughter, Monique (Robert) Marshall; granddaughters, Robyn and Felicia Marshall; sister, Magdalene Lyvon Covington (Samuel Johnson); nieces, Nicole Johnson and Pamela (William) Reynolds; sister-in-law, Jean (James) Covington; grand nieces, Jaida and Kayla Reynolds—all of whom reside in Maryland; nephew, Otis Nathaniel, Jr. (Shantell) of Georgia; and a host of other cousins, relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Otis Nathaniel and James Louis; and son, Lawrence Thomas, Jr.
Lawrence worked at the H & M Moving Company as a warehouseman and truck driver for a number of years prior to his joining the Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in 1979. During his 28-year career with DEA, he served in a variety of positions including warehouseman, motor vehicle operator and Fleet Manager.
Despite his quiet demeanor, Lawrence was a playful man who loved and cherished his family.
