SWEETT, LAWRENCE J.
Lawrence J. Sweett, former New Smyrna Beach City Commissioner, died Friday. The descendant of a Southeast Volusia County pioneer family represented by surnames including Sheldon, Wilson, Murray, and Sams. Mr. Sweett was himself a native and lifetime resident of this area.
During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater with the United States Navy. He then attended both the University of Florida and Florida State University. For several years, he worked with the Daytona Beach News-Journal before becoming a Realtor.
A noted area historian, Mr. Sweett was current president of the Southeast Volusia Historical Society and published two books, one about Minorcan settlers, the other a pictorial of New Smyrna Beach.
Mr. Sweett is survived by his beloved daughter, Zelia, of Orlando.
