Lauris Raye (Collison) Hawkinson, age 84, of Spearfish, SD, passed away to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at a local care facility in Spearfish, from complications of Multiple Sclerosis.
Lauris Raye was born in Hinsdale, MT, June 21, 1930 to Charles E. and Blanche (Smith) Collison. She was raised in Egeland, ND, Havre and Great Falls, MT.
She attended most of her school years in Great Falls, graduating in 1948. In high school, she wrote articles for the school newspaper, was a member of band, chorus and the VFW Jr. Rifle club. In her senior year, she worked for Woolworth in charge of the stockroom and the Lumberyard Supply Co.
She attended MT State College in Bozeman for 2 years, then transferred to the University of MT in Missoula, graduating with a degree in education in 1952. She taught band and English in Forsyth for 30 years. There she met Claude Morgan. They were later married on May 29, 1955. They moved to Billings where he started a freighting business to the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian reservations. Their 2 sons, Michael and Eric where born there. From there, they moved to Ashland where she taught for 2 years. After she and Claude got divorced, Lauris moved to Dixon where she taught band and physical education for 2 years. From there, she moved to Lewiston where she taught English. While moving a piano into her house one day, Lauris met Jerry Hawkinson who she later married on February 14, 1963. From this union, their son Lane was born in Miles City in 1967.
Years later, after her divorce to Jerry, Lauris moved to Phoenix, AR, where she stay with her son Michael, until he passed away in 2003. It was then that she moved to Spearfish, SD, where she stayed with Lane until she later moved into the Dorsett Healthcare Center.
Lauris is survived by her son, Lane Hawkinson of Belle Fouche, SD; brothers, Keith Collison of Bozeman, MT, Hugh Collison of Kirkwood, MO; and 3 grandchildren of Spearfish, SD.
She was preceded in death by her 2 sons, Michael and Eric.
