Laurel Shanafelt Powell, 95, recently residing in Ogden, Utah, died on May 25, 2022 in Ogden due to age-related health issues.
Our beloved Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma was born on January 3rd, 1927 to William Adrian Shanafelt and Laura Emma Prink in Portland, Oregon.
Laurel married Cloan Norris Powell on December 19th, 1948 in Portland, Oregon and they had five children, Matthew Howard, Guy William, John Gray, Grace Ellen and Timothy Adrian raising their family on the Monterey Peninsula in California. Cloan was a World War II veteran, a Physics professor and a wonderful husband and Dad.
Laurel enjoyed being a mother and homemaker. She was active in public and church service and artistic pursuits – pottery, painting, and designing several homes, some of which Cloan built with their sons. She enjoyed travelling and exploring the world with Cloan during their 54 years of marriage before he died in 2003.
Perhaps her biggest legacy will be the volumes of family history books that she felt compelled to research and publish, many of which are now permanently archived with the LDS Church. More than just names and places, she endeavored to capture our ancestors’ lives, characters and stories. Generations will be blessed by her prolific work.
Laurel is survived by her children Matt, Guy, John, Grace and Tim, 18 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
