Laura Louise Berndt, 102 of West Bend died Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, IA. Laura was born August 23, 1915 to Edward and Manda (Hoenstein) Berndt on the family farm near Easton, MN. She was baptized September 12,1915 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. She was confirmed on September 18, 1927 at the same church. In January 1953, Laura moved to West Bend, IA to care for Marie Schafer, the wife of Louis Schafer, and their two children, Donna and Ron. After Marie passed away, Laura worked for several businesses in West Bend and continued to make her home with the Schafer family. In November 2002 she moved to the community apartments in West Bend. Laura enjoyed quilting with the ladies at Peace Lutheran Church, playing cards, watching sunrises and sunsets, bird watching and traveling. She will be remembered for how she cared for people and the love she shared. She was grateful for a long and healthy life. Left to cherish her memory is her “adopted” daughter Donna (Schafer) Brechler, Milford, IA.; 2 granddaughters, Angela (Jay) Chapman, Milford, IA., Kristine (Mike) Ford, Camdenton, MO.; great grandchildren Brittney (Jeremy) Eckard, Lexi (Marc) Johanssen, Dylan Chapman, Keegan and Eden Ford; 2 great-great grandchildren, Caden and Kamryn Eckard; extended family: Ron Schafer; Kelly and Laura Schafer, Henry and Clara; Kregg and Stephanie Schafer, Noah and Gabe; Katie and Kasey Schafer, Cora and Cannon; Kelsey and Ethan Coleman, Quinn Coleman and Kyle and Jordan Schafer; 3 nieces: Norma Rahn, Marge Schmiesing, Norlean Berndt; 1 nephew Bryon Berndt; 30 great nieces and nephews; 53 great-great nieces and nephews, several great-great-great nieces; Galen and Sherry Dykstra and many other special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, Henry and Richard; five sisters, Lena Berndt, Alma Kroenke, Erna Lange, Elda Berndt and one infant sister; 2 sisters-in-law and 2 brothers-in-law.
