WOOD, LAURA LEE, 1963-2021, passed away at the age of 57 on September 5th, 2021. Laura was a devoted wife, stepmom, sister, aunt, friend, ‘Nanny’ and ‘Mama.’
A third-generation Miamian, Laura graduated from Westminster Christian and later attended Georgia Southern University and Barry University. In 1987, she joined the Miami-Dade Police Department. Laura loved her career as much as she loved helping others. She was often moved to the more challenging assignments due to her organizational skills, composure, and keen ability to connect with people. She rose steadily through the ranks and was promoted to Captain in 2004.
When she wasn’t serving the community, she could be found on a golf course (yelling “fore”), watching University of Miami football, at a Miami Dolphin fan support group (no explanation needed), at a poker table (mumbling “rebuy”), or by the pool listening to 101.5 (whether you liked it or not).
Laura’s laugh was as big as her heart, and her quick wit, compassion, and wisdom will be sorely missed. She touched our lives and made us all better people by what she did and how she lived and loved. Her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends.
