Sadly, we lost our dear Laura Fefchak to metastasized breast cancer of the brain on Wednesday, April 28, 2021. Heaven gained a brilliant, talented but feisty soul and the world lost a beautiful person.

Laura was born on March 3, 1971 in Virden, Manitoba, Canada. She moved to Iowa after obtaining her Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Manitoba. She spent the majority of her career working with Des Moines Public Schools, most recently as the Director of Student Services. She loved her co-workers and was looking forward to promoting Social Emotional Learning within the District. She was also a personal therapist to many friends. Laura was a dedicated worker for social justice. She loved to stay active and enjoyed yoga and conquered a marathon. Laura also enjoyed knitting, card making and just spending time with family and friends. She especially looked forward to the Canadian invasion at Thanksgiving.

Laura will be so missed by her spouse, Nancy, and sons, Ian and Elias. She is also survived by her parents, Lyn and Dave Fefchak; brother, Scott (June) and children Hayley, Daelyn and Mac; brother, Mark; sister, Stephanie and children, Cozette and Chandler; great nephews, Tegan and Midnight Sky; a great niece, Selene; brother in law, Kent (Terry) Robinson and their children, Chad and Sean; brother in law, Alan; sister in law, Mary Ellen Overman and children Ben and Bethany (Todd) Watts; great nephews, Kolby and Kaleb; brother in law, Heiko Lechner, and her best friends for life, Stephanie McFarland and Dana Chacun Dudar. Laura also had many aunts, uncles and cousins who loved her and will miss her dearly.

Laura was a proud Canadian whose goal was to move back home to be with her family in five years. God, love her dearly as we all do. You have one of our best. Please take care of our Laura.
