Laura Etta Meggs Barnes, a life-long resident of Jackson, answered the Master’s call on Aug. 15, 2020 while at Providence Hospital in Mobile. She was born on July 16, 1938 to Jim and Clara Nobles Meggs. Laura was a faithful member of St. Union Baptist Church before her health declined. She enjoyed cooking delicious meals for her family, listening to gospel music and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Johnnie Milton Barnes Sr.; two sons, Derrick Milton Barnes and Allen Earl Barnes; sisters, Vernice Burroughs, Emily Lee Meggs, Ida B. Nixon, Jimmie Clara Lucyies and Winfred Johnson; brothers, Willie Davis Meggs, Roy Meggs Sr. and James Meggs; two grandsons, Jamaal Barnes and LaShavon Johnson.
Left to cherish her loving memories are four daughters, Johnetta B. (James) Starling, Pamela B. Watkins and Sarah Y. Barnes, all of Jackson, and Johnny Faye (Rev. Leonard) Watson of Pensacola, Fla.; six sons, Johnnie Milton (Kittrell) Barnes, Terrick Barnes, Stacy (Sophia) Barnes Sr. and Michael L. Barnes, all of Jackson, and Tracey (Monashia) Barnes of Mobile and Joseph O. Barnes of Montgomery; 38 grandchildren, three devoted, Dalvin Barnes, Nikedia Barnes and Brykies Belton; 32 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary L. Donald of Mobile; with a host of nieces, one devoted, Juanita Nix of Detroit, Mich., nephews and relatives; and special friends, LaDora Taylor and Carol McDonald.
