Laura Catherine Quakenbush, 90, died peacefully at home in Midland on March 23, 2010. Laura was born July 14, 1919, in the family sod home on the plains of Haskell County, Kansas to Charles Edward and Flossie Pearl (Follin) Miller. Raised in Kansas she graduated sixth in her class from Kansas State University. She married Ethan Quakenbush on Dec. 20, 1945, in Garden City, KS. He predeceased her in April 2001.
A dedicated lifelong educator Laura taught all levels of students in several Kansas schools until retiring from the Sublette Kansas School system. She was an active community member, especially within her church family. She loved tending her trees, china painting, playing bridge with her friends, and butterflies. Her love of language and books lives on through her grandchildren.
Laura is survived by her daughters, Mary (Gary) Deborski of Midland and Marsha (Pete) Rich of Lawrence, KS; four grandchildren, Christopher Deborski, Corey (Vickie) Deborski, Holly Lawless, and Andrea Rich; four great-grandchildren, Hadley Hartwell, Lauren Deborski, Ethan Lawless, and Ethan Deborski; and one step great-grandson, Hayden DeLong. She also leaves her sister, Mary Vail of Alexandria, VA; sisters-in-law, Roberta Niquette of Denver, CO, and Shirley Burnside of Buffalo, OK; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, five brothers, and one sister.
