Larry L. Nickell, 56, passed away unexpectedly Aug. 12, 2011 after a sudden illness, leaving an indelible mark on a loving extended family and scores of friends and colleagues.
Larry was born on Aug. 18, 1954, to Frank and Edna Nickell. He grew up in Spokane, Washington, where he graduated from North Central High School in 1972. He graduated from Washington State University (remaining a devoted Cougar), and Gonzaga University Law School. He worked for six U.S. Presidents in a lengthy and noteworthy career as an attorney for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, ultimately becoming Associate Chief Counsel, responsible for the legal oversight of more than a dozen Western states and territories.
Larry married Mary Windishar in 1982, and the two built a life together in the Bay Area with a shared love for travel and family. Their twins were born in 1991 and spent the next 20 years making Larry feel proud and deeply loved. Larry delighted in exposing his children to the world, taking the family to Hawaii, New York and Europe. In addition to being a wonderful father, Larry became a big brother to the Windishar clan, planting himself firmly in a nest of traditions. Larry was an avid cook, a voracious reader and a wine enthusiast. He cherished his Irish heritage and cared profoundly for the people in his life.
Larry is preceded in death by his father, Frank Nickell. He is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years, Mary, and his children Erin Angelena and Scott David, all of Alameda; his mother, Edna, of Spokane; brother Bill, of Seattle, and sister Rae, of Anaconda, Mt.; dozens of cousins and other extended family throughout the Northwest and an adoring family by marriage which includes parents-in-law Frank and Lena Windishar, sisters and brothers-in-law and the many nieces and nephews who will forever remember their Uncle Larry.
