Larry Moyes was born to Marie Meacham and Lin O. Moyes on October 15, 1938 in Springville, Idaho. Dad was the baby of the family. His older sister Charlene was his lifetime guiding light and example.
The Moyes family moved to Mantua, Utah and Dad’s formal education started there. He attended Box Elder High School and began working at Thiokol after graduation. He married his high school sweetheart, Pat Petersen, in 1960. Together, they had three daughters and moved the family to Harrisville, Utah so Dad could start his career as proprietor of Ben Lomond Lanes.
Dad enjoyed fishing, a pastime he learned from his parents while living in Idaho. He loved snowmobiling and building projects, especially big garages. Horses, however, were Dad’s favorite. He rode with the Weber County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse for many years and participated in the 1976 recreation of the Pony Express. Dad loved horses so much, he decided to invest in race horses. We spent many hours following the quarter horse races in Wyoming, Idaho and California. Taylor Short proved to be Dad’s winner. This was the time frame when our bonus mom was introduced to us. Carol Tate, we love you dearly. Thank you for being there for us for 28 years plus.
Dad never retired. When asked by our all time favorite nurse Julie Lee, “When did you retire?” His answer was, “I haven’t.” Ben Lomond Lanes was his baby. He loved his bowlers and they showered him with gifts of dish towels, cinnamon bears, and blankets. Ben Lomond Lanes has kept up because of the dedication and ingenuity of Paul Searle. Paul was the son Dad never had. Our thanks goes to Paul and Marianne for their faithful kindness and service.
Dad was a fighter. His battle with cancer lasted over 8 years. Dr. Scheuller, Jaime and Ryan were there for every miracle operation. That radical neck dissection was the wildest of them all. Thank you for making Dad feel like a million bucks. “Tough as nails, sweet as honey.”
Dad had wonderful friends who came to his rescue at just the right time. We are banking on the fact that Joseph Allen and Geary Mecham were there to greet him on the other side. To the North Ogden 2nd and 8th wards, may you know the impact your fellowshipping meant to Dad.
During the last 6 months, Dad rubbed shoulders with some important key players in his story. Intermountain Hospice and The Lodge At North Ogden tenderly catered to Dad’s every need. Julie Lee, you certainly deserved a “Christmas envelope” (and then some) and Savannah, your care of Dad on his final day will never be forgotten and always appreciated.
Dad is survived by his three daughters, Laurel Moyes (Layton), Leanne Wilcox (Kaysville), and Kristine and Casey Barker (North Ogden). Dad was the grandpa to Jason Rackham, Josh Rackham, Jake Rackham, Jared Rackham, Chandler Coburn, Brennan Coburn, Austin Coburn, Erin Miller, Emilee Cole and Annie Bailey. Dad is also survived by his sister Charlene Summers and brother-in-law Dorain Summers and their family.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents Lin and Marie Moyes and his grandson Jason Rackham.
