Larry Kenneth Verley, 81, of Boerne, passed away on Saturday, October 23, 2021.
Larry was born May 26, 1940 near Riverton, Wyoming on a farm near where his father was building a homestead at that time. He is the son of Floyd L. and Fern Brines Verley. They lived on the homestead until January 1950 when they moved to Riverton. In July 1961 he married his high school sweetheart, the former Veronica L. McCauley, daughter of L.M. (Jack) and Grace Jenkins. Larry attended school in both Shoshoni and Riverton. As a teenager, Larry played high school football and American Legion baseball. He worked hard to pay for his education in jobs such as milk delivery, school janitor, mining camp cook’s helper, as a survey crew member for the Wyoming Highway Department, and general work at the University Campus Shop cafeteria. Upon graduation from high school in 1958 he enrolled at the University of Wyoming where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1962. He was a participant in the college Air Force ROTC program and was commissioned as a second Lieutenant upon graduation. He later received a Master of Business Administration degree from Michigan State University. He served a total of 21 years including assignments to Robins AFB, GA; O’Fallon, IL; Hawaii; Air Force Command and Staff College in Montgomery, AL; and the Pentagon in Washington, DC. His last duty station was in Albuquerque, NM, where he retired in 1983 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After Air Force retirement, Larry put his vast experience as a comptroller to work as a cost analyst for various corporations in Palm Bay, FL; Harlingen, TX; Albuquerque, NM; and Cocoa Beach, FL. He and Veronica moved to Boerne, TX in 2004 where they continued to reside until Larry’s death. Larry was a determined person from the very start of his life as a farm boy. He grew to become not just a determined young man, but one who had a strong sense of decency and compassion. Always thoughtful, caring, and compassionate, Larry balanced a strong commitment to serve in whatever position he held with that of a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and loyal friend. He was passionate about those he loved and it showed through words and actions. Retirement brought him an opportunity to explore and grow his faith and service calling through various church groups, and the First United Methodist Church of Boerne Stephen Ministry. Retirement also gave him more opportunities to do what he loved most, which included time in the outdoors fishing and camping, tending to his vegetable gardens, writing poetry, and researching the family history. Whether it was while raising his own children or helping take care of his grand-daughter, no job was too big or too small. Mentoring and life lessons were always based on a high set of values.
He is survived by his wife Veronica Verley; son Craig Verley, and wife Ana in Mission, TX, and their son Dylan Weeks in New York, NY; daughter Anita Verley of Boerne, TX, and her daughter Caitlin Lucille Bumgarner of Austin, TX; sister Mina Verley Rauch of Silverton, OR; and brother Leigh Verley and his wife Jean of Bullhead City, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Duane Verley.
