Passed away Friday morning, December 23, 2016 at Riverview Manor in Three Rivers. Larry was born October 15, 1929 in Battle Creek, MI the son of the late Walter and Phyllis (Martin) Watson. He graduated in 1947 from Battle Creek Senior High School where he was active in scouting, earning Eagle Scout, and was a varsity swimmer.
Larry graduated from Michigan Technological University in 1951 with a degree in Forestry then served in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in the U.S. and France during the Korean War. He returned to Michigan Tech and graduated in 1958 as a Civil Engineer. Larry worked for Ingersoll Engineers until it became Ingersoll, Watson and McMachen where he retired as President in 1993. He was active in the design of many residential subdivisions and commercial projects, such as Parkview Hills and the Target/Home Depot site.
Larry was involved with the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers; and the Michigan Society of Land Surveyors. He was the Director and Past President of the Michigan Land Surveyors Foundation; and longtime member and Past President of the Portage Kiwanis. Larry served 10 years on the Portage Planning Commission and after his retirement he volunteered for several years delivering for Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed wood-turning and made many beautiful wooden pieces.
He also belonged to the American Association of Woodturners in Portage. On April 18, 1959 in Hancock, MI, he was united in marriage to his loving wife, Joanne Mitchell who survives. Also surviving are his children, Kathleen (Daniel) Stuut, Thomas (Susan) Watson; 2 grandchildren, Matthew Stuut, Sara Stuut; and a great-grand daughter, Carmen Stuut. Larry was preceded in death by his brother, Walter who died while serving in the U.S. Navy.
