Larry E. Strubbe, 80, of rural Jacksonville, IL died Saturday, January 2, 2016, as a result of injuries sustained in an accident while working on his farm in rural Jacksonville.
He was born May 13, 1935 in Morgan County, the son of Edward and Ruth Lillie Hayes Strubbe. He married Nancy McCarty on February 14, 1959 at Salem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville and she survives.
He is also survived by four children, Larry G. Strubbe (wife, Janet), Linda Strubbe, and Scott Strubbe, all of Jacksonville and Doug Strubbe (wife, Molly) of Louisburg, KS; ten grandchildren, Kaila Freeman (husband, Jacob) of Woodson, Deborah Strubbe (fiance, Scott Shelts) of Rushville, Nickole Strubbe and Malynnda Strubbe, both of Jacksonville, and Gillin Newell, Grant Strubbe, Mack Newell, Mathilde Newell, Jill Strubbe, and Charlotte Strubbe, all of Louisburg, KS; a great granddaughter, Alaina Freeman of Woodson; three sisters, Mary Zenge (husband, Keith) and Donna Moody, all of Jacksonville, and Delores Lindsay of Dubuque, IA; a brother, Joseph Strubbe (wife, Karen) of Costa Mesa, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Richard A. Strubbe (surviving wife, Jeanne of Jacksonville); and three brothers-in-law, Vernon Opperman, Kawyn Moody, and Herbert Lindsay.
A graduate of Virginia High School, Larry served with the US Army from 1955 to 1958 and continued to serve with the Reserves until 1963. He began working for the A & P grocery store in Jacksonville where he met his wife of 56 years, Nancy. He was employed at Hertzberg New-Method Book Bindery and later as a supply supervisor for the Jacksonville Correctional Center for 20 years. During his retirement, Larry enjoyed both volunteering and working at Passavant Area Hospital.
Larry was a devoted member of Salem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville where he served as an usher and formerly as a deacon and elder. He was also a long-time dedicated volunteer with the Combined Veterans Ceremonial Team, providing military ceremonies at area cemeteries for deceased veterans and their families.
Larry remained a farmer at heart, with a farm project always needing attention. He enjoyed raising and showing swine. He maintained a passion for the Morgan County 4-H clubs having been involved as a child, a parent, and a grandparent.
