Larry Calhoun, 77, of Jacksonville, died Saturday, March 28, 2015, at Heritage Health in Jacksonville.

He was born Oct. 9, 1937, in his grandparents’ farmhouse near Revere, MO, to A. Keith and Neva Parker Calhoun. He grew up in Ft. Madison, IA, and later often used the Mississippi River as a subject of his paintings.

He graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1959 with the great Olympic runner Jesse Owens giving the graduation speech. Later that day, in the Wesleyan Chapel, he married Marilyn Walker. Her father, the Rev. Raymond Walker, performed the ceremony.

Larry later acquired a Masters Degree in Art from the University of Iowa. He taught at Westmar College in Iowa, Millikin in Decatur, University of Akron in Ohio and MacMurray College in Jacksonville. He was a prolific artist, working in clay, wood, pastels, watercolor, and oil paint. His work was exhibited in numerous galleries and museums, most recently at the Strawn Art Gallery in September of 2014.

Larry had many interests-playing tennis, softball on a MacMurray faculty team, bicycling, canoeing and watching the White Sox play. A great pleasure was seeing them win the World Series on Oct. 26, 2005. Other special interests were reading, studying Native American culture, jazz, movies, a good bottle of Scotch, camping with family and students, the Hole in the Wall gang, and Read and Feed.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; son Eric of Dallas, TX; daughters Robin Asbell (husband, Stan) and Rachael Calhoun, of Minneapolis, MN; and grandchildren Annabel, Lauren and Eric II Calhoun, all of Dallas, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Terry Heckenburg; and a brother, Gary Calhoun.

Our Husband and Dad, kept us safe-We loved him and he loved us.
