Kirk was born January 4, 1934, in Lake City, Iowa, to George and Maude (Wagner) Colvig. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1959, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. He met his future wife, Barbara Johnson of Storm Lake, Iowa, on a blind date arranged by a high school friend of Barbara’s. They married three years later on January 24, 1959. They moved to Phoenix, Arizona where their first two children were born and he worked at various architectural firms. He retired in 2005 after which he and Barbara wintered in Orange Beach, Alabama for 15 years.

He was a member of Ducks Unlimited, had served on the boards of IZAAK Walton League and the Good Fellowship Club and had served as Treasurer on the Iowa Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Kirk is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara, his children, Kathryn Colvig of Nosara, Costa Rica; David (Jill) DeForest Colvig of Des Moines, IA, and Paul Colvig of Kansas City, MO; five grandchildren, Angela (Jermaine) Byrd of Dover, NC, Georgia (Tony) Weil, Mitchell (Whitney Maclin) DeCarlo, Lily Colvig, and Clara Colvig, all of Des Moines, IA; and five great-grandchildren, Janiya, Jermaine, Vincent, Bernadette and Sloane.
