Kenneth Carpenter, age 88, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at ECU Medical Center in Greenville, NC. He was born May 24, 1934 in Woodsfield, OH., the son of the late Nelson and Zelma Carpenter. Ken had been raised at the Ohio Soldier’s and Sailor’s Orphan’s Home. He was a 1953 graduate of the Woodrow Wilson High School where he had taken printing as a vocation and learned to typeset on the Linotype. Following graduation he began his career at Ashland Times Gazette where he worked full time for 40 years. He had also been employed part time with Art Printing Co. until his retirement. He moved to Bailey Lakes in 1972 and was appointed to Council in 1973 where he served for three years before becoming Mayor in 1976.
While serving as Mayor he made several improvements to the community including establishing the town hall which the Council honored him by naming it “Carpenter’s Hall”. Other improvements included the village purchasing the water and sewer system along with building a water treatment plant, replacing water lines to the village, and replacing the village dam. Ken was elected to the Ashland Community Federal Credit Union Board of directors, serving 3 years 1 being president. He was a member of the Eagles Club. He enjoyed playing golf, taking his family camping and had a woodworking shop.
On June 13, 1953 Ken married Doris E. (Longden) Carpenter who preceded him in death in 2011. Survivors include his daughter, Denise Klier of Greenville, NC; his 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and two great – great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his daughters and one son; Cynthia Adams, Pamela Lindecamp and son, Mark Carpenter.
